Love Dance...Share the Passion!
dancers greet with a hug

If you love to dance, think about sharing your passion with a friend.  Bring A Friend to Dance Class Week is a a special week at the Dancing Arts Center where dance students (age 3-12) can share their love of movement, music, and drama with an invited friend during their weekly lesson.  Unlike Peek Week, where friends and family are invited to observe the dancer during his/her weekly class, Bring a Friend to Dance Class Week allows friends of the dancers to actually experience a full class for FREE! What a wonderful opportunity for  friends with little or no movement experience to jump in, try a class, and experience the passion for themselves!

On top of that, friends can meet the teachers, take a tour of DAC, and learn how to join the fun. Invited guests should wear attire that allows ease of movement.  For advice, students can ask their teacher.
Mark you calendars:  Bring a Friend to Dance Class Week is October 12-17th. Don't miss the fun!

Evaluation Process and Conferencing
The DAC staff and parents concur.  Evaluations and conferencing are a valuable tool to understand progress and goals in a student's education.  There is more to DAC than weekly dance lessons.

Youth division students receive two evaluations per year (Jan. / June) Main division students learn to self-evaluate (Jan.) and receive a teacher assessment at the end of the school year (June).  Main division students are encouraged and assisted by the teachers to keep a progress journal to help with their self-assessment and to prepare for their mid-year conference.

New this year: Any student who maintains a progress journal and completes his / her self evaluations may schedule a FREE conference with his / her teachers on the designated conference day (midway during the year).  All others will be invoiced $25 per 10-minute session. Parents can step in to be sure their child takes advantage of all the guidance available at DAC by supporting regular journaling and timely self assessments.

DAC staff will continue to meet with upper school students as they plan their career moves and graduation concert.
Greetings!

Summer Concert
studio performance
To entertain or demonstrate progress....what is a concert for? Each seasonal concert helps students learn different skills, not just new dances (although that is part of it).   Our annual summer concerts provide a chance for students to present their dance skills in a challenging and very intimate atmosphere.  Seeing faces of family and friends so close can be intimidating, especially without the support of lights and scenery to allude to the mood and compliment the dance.  Dancing in a smaller boxed setting teach performers how to tighten their spacing and neatly navigate entrances and exits.

Audience members only see the finished product.  Teachers, students, and colleagues experience a deeper and more full process as all participants grow closer.  Each participant supports the process with exchanges of feedback, sharing studio space, and assisting in costume development.

Concerts are a vehicle by which all participants foster a generous spirit and a non-competitive nurturing atmosphere with all.  This year's concert presented the most diverse program ever.  I hope you were able to come.  If not, the next concerts are just weeks away!

Class Preparations
As a child, I always looked forward to the start of the new school year. Back to school always meant, new clothes, new shoes, new school supplies and most importantly the opportunity to catch up with friends I hadn't seen all summer. For dancers, back to school also means back to dance and the opportunity to catch up with your dance friends. Whether you danced intensively over the summer, just took a few classes, or took a short break from dance, proper preparation will help you transition back into the school year dance schedule and routine more smoothly.

When shopping for back to school clothes, don't forget to restock your dance wardrobe. In addition to class leotards and tights, main division students should also have thin white cotton ankle socks, a white 3' waist band, and a robe or wrap to wear between classes. Male students need a dance belt, and extra black OR white socks (thin cotton).

Make sure your dance shoes still fit.=20
Pointe students should carry three pairs of pointe shoes: one well-broken in, one partially-broken in, and one brand new and ready to go with ribbons already sewn in place.

When shopping for back to school supplies, don't forget to pick up a notebook or journal for your dance journal. Not only does journaling help you reflect on what you did well and what you need to work on, but when you look at your entries over time, you'll get to see all the progress you didn't realize you made :)

Take an inventory of your dance bag. In addition to the proper attire for your dance class, do you have the following items:
dance shoes,
extra tights and leotard for emergencies,
hair brush, hair gel, hair pins, bobbie pins,
ponytail holders, and hair nets,
deodorant,
a small sewing kit t repair shoes and dancewear,
your journal and a pen or pencil,
alcohol wipes to clean your feet after dancing barefoot, and
a hand towel?

Make sure you write your first and last names in all of your dance attire and on all of your belongings.

Start the year right by eating well and getting plenty of sleep. Eating and sleeping well helps you meet your current school and exercise needs and provided you with long-term health.

Know what's going on at DAC by reading the weekly announcements, emails, and newsletters.

The new year is a great time to pick up the extra ballet or modern class you've been thinking about or to try a new class such as Character, Variations, Ballroom Dancing or Choreography.

A new year brings new possibilities.  We all look forward to a wonderful year of dance!
