On September 14, six DAC students and five parents took a trip into Boston to see A Chorus Line. A Chorus Line is the longest running American Broadway musical and is the winner of nine Tony Awards. After enjoying a delicious all you can eat brunch, which featured made to order pancakes, omlets, and stir frys, at Fire & Ice, the group headed over to the Boston Opera House to see the show.

This high-energy show was presented without intermission. The story takes place on a bare stage in a Broadway theater in 1975. Casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete and 17 dancers are auditioning for the remaining 8 spots in the chorus line. Through the audition, we learned about each dancer, how they came to be dancer and what casting in this show means to them. We also learned how being a member of a chorus is different from being a principal dancer. This was particularly illustrated through the character of Cassie, who left NY to become a star, and has now returned and hoping just to be a part of the chorus.

All of the DAC students who attended have had the experience of auditioning for roles and performing in DAC's various dance concerts. They were able to relate and compare their audition experiences and their dance dreams to those of the characters. They were also able to critically review the dancer's performances as they formed circles that weren't completely circular and lines that were not always straight. Skills they are all still working on in their own performances.

Overall, everyone enjoyed the show. The day only got better when after the show the students met Colin Bradbury (Bobby) who signed autographs and posed for pictures with them.

Holiday Concert Preparations Underway
Holiday Concert Group Photo 2006
Walk through the doors of DAC on any Saturday afternoon and you can feel the excitement. Wardrobes are being created, dancers are rehearsing, and tickets are being sold. Outside of DAC, scenery and props are being built. Weeknights are abuzz with modern and jazz rehearsals. A make-up workshop and costume parade have already been held and there will be a photo shoot with all the dancers and a professional photographer in mid-November. Preparations have been underway since early September for DAC's  annual Holiday Concert to be held on December 20 at Wellesley College's beautiful Sorenson Theater.

This year the Holiday Concert will feature the ballet Cinderella, choreographed by our own Mr. Stewarte, and seasonal modern and jazz pieces choreographed by Mrs. Edison and Ms. Hawkins. Approximately 50 dancers from the ages of 6 to 18 have been working hard to prepare for this concert.

If you've never been to DAC's Holiday Concert, this is a great time to try something new. If you've been to DAC's Holiday Concerts in the past, you're to sure to enjoy this fresh new production. Be sure to order your tickets now. Group discounts are available when ordered before December 10th.

Student Concert: Another Successful Production
Holiday Concert Group Photo 2006On October 25 & 26 approximately 40 students participated in DAC's annual Student Dance Concert. The entire dance concert was created by students, from choreography and dancing to lighting, ushering, and stage managing.
Choreographers and dancers planned and managed their own rehearsal time and had to audition their pieces serveral times in front of panels of their peers and their teachers before being accepted into the cast.   The result was a delightful concert that ranged from the fairy tale imaginations of the very young to the more skeptical and searching movements of the older dancers. Thank you to all who supported the concert this year. We hope you enjoyed the show.

Give Me a Break!
DAC staff and students will have a short break for Thanksgiving from November  26-30. After this, preparations for our upcoming holiday concert will be in full gear with studio run-throughs, dress rehearsals, and theater rehearsals culminating in two theater performances on December 20 and two outreach performances at local nursing homes on December 22. No wonder everyone will be looking forward to an almost two week winter break! Taking a break allows you to  recuperate and to return to dance with renewed interest.

You should not feel guilty about resting, reconnecting with friends and family, and taking some well-deserved time to just hang around the house in your pajamas. This is a great time to read a book, watch a movie, listen to music, visit a museum, see a show, or take a nature walk.

With such a long break, it is easy to get out of shape. During this downtime there are simple things you can do to help you be ready for a strong return to dance:
  • Stretch daily  - you can even do this while watching TV
  • Sit and walk with good posture
  • Eat sensibly - this doesn't mean you can't enjoy holiday treats, but be sure to eat healthy food first

November is Harvest Month
November is Harvest Month and with it comes an array of food colors, textures, and thus nutrients. With parsnips, sweet potatoes, apples, pumpkins, winter squash, pears, beets, turnips, clementines, and pomegrantes in season, it's just as easy now as it was in the summer to eat a rainbow of colors everyday.  One easy way to reduce the fat and enjoy this season's vegetables is to roast them. Not only are roasted vegetables good for you and easy to make, they are also delicious because their natural sugars get carmelized during the cooking process. Try this recipe:
Roasted Vegetables
INGREDIENTS: 6 carrots, halved crosswise, then lengthwise
3 sweet potatoes, cut into large chunks
2 medium onions, peeled, each cut into 8 wedges
                     1 acorn squash, unpeeled, quartered
lengthwise, seeded and cut crosswise into 1/2
                     inch slices
                     4 Tablespoons olive oil
                     1 cup balsamic vinegar
                     Kosher salt to taste
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large roasting pan, combine vegetables and olive oil; toss until vegetables are coated. Roast vegetables until golden and tender, stirring occassionally, about 45 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a saucepan, simmer balsamic vinegar over medium heat until reduced by half. Vinegar will become syrupy as it reduces. When vegetables are roasted, sprinkle with Kosher salt to taste, then drizzle with the balsamic syrup.
